In 1985, Uluru (then called Ayers Rock) was handed back to the Anangu people by the Australian government. They were finally recognized as the traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and their traditional name for this large sandstone rock, Uluru, replaced the old name, Ayers Rock. Currently, it is called by its dual name. The rock and the surrounding area is as stunningly beautiful, unique place. The view one has is a 360 degree panorama of flat red earth, interrupted only by Uluru itself and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) in the distance. The sky provides a blue dome surrounding this flat red landscape during the day. At night, it is a star-studded wonder.
Visiting Uluru is about watching, listening, sensing, and learning, especially learning Tjukurpa, the foundation of Anangu culture. In the past, for many people, visiting Uluru was about climbing the rock, but the percentage of those climbing has decreased considerably. The Anangu respectfully ask that visitors do not climb for 3 main reasons:
- Cultural - Uluru has great spiritual importance for the Anangu.
- Safety - it is actually quite dangerous to climb. Many people have died or been injured.
- Environmental - footsteps and human waste has causes damage and pollution to the water around the rock.
Instead of climbing, there are many other walks around the base of the rock, as well as around Kata Tjuta, while learning Tjukurpa, stories of the Dreamtime or Creation.
