In Keisen’s Department of English Communication, the goal of our classes is of course to improve your ability to communicate in English. To communicate well in English, you need three things: the ability to communicate, the desire to communicate, and something to communicate about.
THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE: In the EC Department, you don’t study English?you learn it. After studying English in junior high and high school, you don’t have to do that again?now you should learn how to use it. In your first year at Keisen, the curriculum includes:
Eigo I study skills required for university education
Eigo II common points between the input skills (listening and reading)
Eigo III common points between the output skills (speaking and writing)
Eigo IV critical and logical thinking skillsTHE DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE: Many of our classes are content-based. Instead of studying English for entrance examinations, you will be studying practical English for communicating about the course content. You will have chances to think about these topics, discuss them with your classmates, research them more deeply, and give presentations about them.
SOMETHING TO COMMUNICATE ABOUT: We teach courses on Gender Issues, Understanding Cultural Differences, American Culture, Media Literacy, Popular Music, Western Art History, Western Literature, and Western Humor. You will study these topics and develop opinions about them, then speak and write about them in class and for homework.
Our curriculum combines skills (the ability to speak, listen, read, write, and think in English), motivation (willingness to learn and the desire to express yourself), and content (timely and stimulating topics). For some students, the next step is becoming teachers themselves: we also offer teacher training and English Language Teaching for Young Learners.
