梅雨 その4
2008年06月23日
「夏になったら」Summer is a very exciting time for an adolescent because there is much to enjoy but mainly because school is out! When I was a youngster, I remember the many sensations I experienced during the summertime. Here are some of my childhood memories:
1. Sound: the sound of cicadas, mosquitoes buzzing around my head, the whirring of the electric fan, the rustling of bamboo leaves, wind chimes, “omatsuri drums” in the distance, the slapping of slippers
2. Taste: ice shave with sweet beans and condensed milk, watermelon, slurping cool buckwheat noodles, chewing orange flavored bubble gum, “karupisu” in the afternoon.3. Smell: burnt “hanabi” sparkles, the smell of “tatami” mats, open-air barbecue, “katorisenko”, the scent of a fan unfolding, boiled “edamame” on the table, opening a “bento” box.
4. Sight: exploding fireworks, kids running away from ocean waves, sand castles at the beach, Yomiuri Giants baseball games, evening festivals in the neighborhood.
5. Touch: mosquito bites, perspiration down my back, ice cold “ramune” bottle against my cheek, the hot sun on my shoulders, the gentle breeze in the evening after a bath.
