“Always- san-chome no yuuhi”One of my favorite movies to watch is “Always- san chome no yuuhi” for two reasons: I am reminded of my childhood days in Tokyo and that the 1950s and 60s brought a sense of anticipation to the community. When I was a young boy, I remember being woken up every morning to the full view of Tokyo Tower and all of its grandeur from my bedroom window, and so it is with “Always”. The construction of Tokyo Tower is the story’s “centerpiece” and provides hope for the new generation.
As the audience witnesses the tower taking form, they root for the dreams of each neighbor in “san chome”: a down-on-his-luck story writer, an aspiring small shop mechanic, a snack house hostess-turned dancer, an orphaned boy looking for his missing mother, a homesick country girl adjusting to city life, and a doctor in search of his family. Not everything goes well: the hostess disappears mysteriously and the boy’s real mother abandons him. Despite these setbacks they never lose hope; like the young boy who keeps on losing in the “kuji” game, he never gives up because there’s always the possibility that he will triumph some day.
