英字新聞The Japan Newsの記事を中心に、さまざまな単語や表現を学んでいる本ゼミですが，先日12月13日（火）は英語コミュニケーション学科の迫井若菜さんが「星空世界遺産の地を目指して」という記事を取り上げて発表しました。福井県大野市が「ハンモックに乗って美しい星空を眺めることができる場所」として街をアピールしている、という内容です。（私を含め）多くのゼミ生がこのような街があることを本記事で初めて知りました。政治や社会問題だけでなく、このような国内の魅力ある観光都市について学べるのも英字新聞を読むメリットの一つだと思います。今回は難解な英文で、ゼミ生皆が苦労して読みましたが、読解力養成という点でも良い勉強になりました。以下は迫井さんが作成した発表資料やゼミの様子です。
Star-gazing city shoots for Dark Sky Place status
The hammock gently sways in the cool breeze of the highland. The sun has set, and I look up at a sky that grows darker by the minute. Soon it becomes awash in stars as far as the can see.
I have come to the Minami - Rokuroshi district of Ono, Fukui Prefecture, for a local event in which one can gaze at the stars from the comfort of hammock.
Despite its relative proximity to large cities like Fukui and Kanazawa, Ono offers a wonderful view of an unencumbered star-filled sky, enough so that the city aims to have the district recognized as an International Dark Sky Place.
A feature of the Bid is the "Hoshi Zora Hammock'' (star-filled sky hammock), a popular event that attracts people, which is one of the requirements for earning Dark Sky Place designation. ''Dark Sky Places, sometimes dubbed "the World Heritage sites of the night sky" are divided into six categories based on the situation at the proposed sites.

英語教育の中でも、特にライティング指導を中心に研究しています。これまで教育現場で数多くの英文添削をしてきたなかで、学習者の英作文に見られる誤用に一定の傾向があることに興味関心を抱くようになりました。その原因や背景をより深く分析することで、自然な表現ができるような指導を模索しています。また、「ことばと社会」の関係を英語時事表現から研究しています。
